Joining Forces: The Senior Parent Initiative

It’s a tradition at St. Lawrence that each year the seniors choose a project for their Senior Class Gift. This past fall, the Class of 2016 proudly announced a partnership with the Alumni Executive Council (AEC), whereby their class gifts would help to support an existing endowment for internships and experiential learning.

The announcement inspired Anne and Michael Moran P’16 to create a $100,000 challenge match for internship support.

All gifts to the Alumni Executive Council Endowment for Internships and Experiential Learning fund will be used to support St. Lawrence University students who have secured an internship, including structured career development or research opportunities during the summer. These awards help offset the cost of living, travel and transportation expenses. Funds may also cover income replacement, if adequate need is demonstrated.

As a result of the Senior Parent Initiative, almost 100 parents contributed a total of $155,750 split among the Alumni Executive Council Endowment, Moran Family Fund (an expendable internship Fellowship), the John Meagher Endowment Fund and the St. Lawrence Fund.

The Senior Class was excited to partner with parents and alumni in creating a lasting legacy and providing opportunities for future students to realize transformative internships and experiential education. Sixty-seven percent of students take advantage of these opportunities at some point during their four years at St. Lawrence. However, there are many who would like to participate but are unable to for financial reasons. The money raised through this initiative will help to change this. At the end of the 2015-2016 fundraising year, the AEC endowment stands at approximately $200,000.
